How to summarize a video without a transcript
Updated October 30, 2026
To summarize a video that has no transcript, you need a tool that listens and looks at the picture itself. On a Mac, Screen Gist does this: play the video, pick its window, press Start and Stop. It transcribes the speech, reads on-screen text and describes what's shown, then writes a summary with timed chapters.
How to do it
Play the video
In any app or browser tab: YouTube, Vimeo, a course site, a video file in QuickTime.
Pick its window in Screen Gist
Choose Standard (or High for fast video), then press Start.
Press Stop when it ends
You get an overview, chapters with times, the transcript, and what was shown at each moment.
Why most summarizers need a transcript
Most online video summarizers fetch the video's captions and summarize that text. When a video has no captions, auto-captions are turned off, or most of it is visual, there's nothing for them to read, and they fail or guess.
How Screen Gist works without one
- It transcribes the sound itself, with speaker labels, in dozens of languages.
- It reads the screen: slide titles, code, labels and captions burned into the picture.
- It understands what's shown: scenes, charts and each step of a demo.
- It puts it all together, in order, in one summary.
So a silent product demo, a chart-heavy talk or a coding screencast still gets a useful summary.
What it can't do
Copy-protected video (Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+ and some courses) appears black to every screen-capture app, so Screen Gist can only use its sound. It tells you when that happens.
Questions
Can AI summarize a video with no captions?
Yes, if it can hear and see the video. Screen Gist transcribes the speech itself and reads and describes the picture, so captions aren't needed.
Can ChatGPT summarize a video without a transcript?
Not from a link alone: chatbots generally need the transcript or the file. A screen-based app like Screen Gist works from what's actually playing.
Does it work for videos with no speech at all?
Yes. With Standard or High quality, Screen Gist summarizes from what's shown and the text on screen, even when nobody speaks.
Is the video uploaded anywhere?
Nothing is kept. Only what's needed to write your summary is processed, and it's deleted straight after.
Try it
Screen Gist is in private beta. New Macs get 50 free credits, about 25 minutes of video, with no card needed.
