Summarize lecture videos, slides included

Updated October 30, 2026

To summarize a lecture video with AI, use a tool that reads the slides as well as the speech. Screen Gist does this on a Mac: play the lecture from any site or file, pick its window and press Start. You get study notes as timed chapters, with slide titles, formulas and diagrams included.

How to do it

  1. Open the lecture

Coursera, Udemy, edX, Panopto, YouTube, a Zoom recording or a downloaded file.

  2. Pick the window and press Start

Standard quality reads every new slide; it costs 2 credits a minute.

  3. Press Stop and review

Read the overview, then each chapter with its time, and the transcript underneath.

Why slides matter

In most lectures the key definitions, formulas and figures are on the slides, not spoken word for word. A transcript-only summary misses them. Screen Gist reads the slides and understands diagrams and charts, so they're in your notes.

Good for revision

  • Timed chapters let you jump back to the exact explanation.
  • History keeps every summary and transcript on your Mac, searchable.
  • Copy the summary into your notes app in one click.

Cost of a lecture

A 50-minute lecture at Standard quality is 100 credits, about 83 cents with the $25 pack. Audio-only lectures cost half that at the sound-only rate.

Questions

Can AI summarize lecture videos?

Yes. Screen Gist listens to the lecturer and reads the slides, then writes timed chapter notes.

Does it read handwriting on a blackboard?

It describes what's on the board and reads clear writing, but neat slides work best.

Which lecture sites does it work with?

Any site or app you can play on your Mac: Coursera, Udemy, edX, Panopto, Canvas, Moodle, YouTube and Zoom recordings.

Is it allowed to summarize my course videos?

Screen Gist only summarizes what you're already watching and doesn't keep recordings. Check your course's rules for anything you share.
